Water Basket Tank Designs Selections Approved!

RESOLUTION NO. 2024-01 TO APPROVE FINAL TANK PAINTING DESIGNS FOR THE TWO WATER STORAGE TANKS ON RABBIT HILL

 WHEREAS, Callayomi County Water District owns and maintains two water storage tanks on Rabbit Hill Located at 21230 Santa Clara Rd in Middletown, CA, and

WHEREAS, Callayomi County Water District received bids to prep and paint only the smaller of the two water storage tanks that ranged from $48,000 to $62,000, and

WHEREAS, Callayomi County Water District approved a collaboration with the Middletown Art Center (MAC) to prep, paint, and add murals to both water storage tanks with costs not to exceed $60,000 and include input from residents within the District, and

WHEREAS, Callayomi County Water District, the Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California, and the Middletown Art Center (MAC) further collaborated and agreed on a Water Basket mural design for the water tanks, and

WHEREAS, the Middletown Art Center (MAC) was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for the Water Basket mural project with Callayomi County Water District and Middletown Rancheria both contributing in-kind to the project, and

WHEREAS, the project was announced at a Middletown Area Town Hall (MATH) meeting in 2022 and the concept was unanimously approved by all present, and since then, through numerous public events, classes and community presentations, native and non-native artists and community members have engaged in cultural education and the process of creating and selecting designs for the project, and

 WHEREAS, residents of Middletown Unified School District and South Lake County Fire Protection District were invited to vote on the six Water Basket-inspired designs selected by a jury composed of two representatives each from the Middletown Rancheria, Tribal Cultural Educators, Callayomi County Water District, Middletown Area Town Hall (MATH), Middletown Area Merchants Association (MAMA), the Middletown area community, and the Middletown Art Center;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Board of Directors of the Callayomi County Water District approves the following final designs with 360° murals inspired by Pomo Basketry and the local natural world (Exhibit A) to be painted on the two large water tanks located at the highest point in Middletown on Rabbit Hill.

The foregoing resolution was duly introduced and adopted by the Board of the Callayomi County Water District at their regular meeting held on July 18, 2024, by the following vote:
